Sgraffito, derived from the Italian word “sgraffiare,” meaning “to scratch,” is a decorative technique used in pottery and other art forms. In pottery, sgraffito is often done on clay that is in a leather-hard state, after it has dried somewhat but is still pliable. Artists use various tools, such as needles, knives, or carving tools, to scratch through the surface layer of slip or glaze to expose the clay body underneath. This technique allows for intricate designs, patterns, and textures to be created on the surface of the pottery.
